The Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt is part of the St. Paul Winter Carnival every year. While the prize can only go to one winner, The Allison Wonderland is dedicated to the community spirit of treasure hunting. Here, not only will you find out about the Pre-Dig Gig, the Rehash Bash, and various other social events, but we also discuss the clues here in a team effort to decipher them (albeit not always successfully). This is a place to discuss ideas respectfully, report on what's happening "on the ground", and provide each other with useful information. This is a public group so expect that anything posted will be seen by everyone.

Thank you for always getting us to the right park David. It is fun to be at the right park looking even if we don’t find the medallion. At our age, we usually sit in the car and talk & watch more than dig. We have many fun memories. The rehash bash sounds fun! Diggin’ Davis

For myself, I've learned not to get too invested in a park early on. There is a tendency to then make future clues fit that park to prove you were right rather than listen to what they are actually telling you. So I think I will list a bunch of parks that I think they might have used.   Hidden Falls - 1 Crosby - 1 Highland - 1 Como - 1 Harriet Island - 1 Battle Creek - 1 Linwood - 1 Cherokee - 1 Newell - 1 Merriam - 1

Thanks for always putting this together David. I agree with Jt about it being out of the city. I wouldn’t be surprised if they wanted to keep us away from it this year. I’ll go 10 on Tony Schmidt

I am going to pick Como Park 10. Out a little bit from the city, still in St. Paul proper (140th anniversary), a lot of parking so people can be scattered a bit. Jone Tiffany (jotiff1)

Park Pick Contest

So now that the first clue is out, I guess it makes sense to announce the annual park pick contest. It will be the same as in previous years, so if you're familiar with it, you can skip the rest of this.   If you're not entirely familiar with it, here is how it works. The prize is $100. It is free to participate. The winner is the person who scores the most points in the contest. If there is a tie, then among those tied, it goes to whoever had the earliest pick for the correct park.   After each clue comes out, you may make guesses as to what park you think the medallion is hidden in. You get 10 guesses per clue. You can use those guesses to guess 10 different parks. You can use them all on one park. You could use 5 on one park, 3 on a second one, and 2 on a third one. Or however you want to break it up. But you must post your guesses to the message board. Private messages will not count. You are free to change your guesses by making a new post before the next clue comes out. If you do not make a new post after a new clues comes out, then your previous guesses will be assumed to carry over to future clue until a new post overrides them.   The scoring works like this. You get 1 point for each correct guess made on the day the medallion was found (but must be made prior to the find). You get 2 points for each correct guess made the day before it was found. You get 3 points for each correct guess made the day before that, and so on. So if the hunt went on for 10 clues (for example), then each correct guess made today would be worth 10 points.   There is some strategy to picking a likely park and just going all in on it from the start. If that's the right park, and you were the first person to pick it, then you've guaranteed victory. I will say though that this has rarely resulted in a winner. There might also be some strategy to naming a bunch of parks early on, hoping to get the tiebreaker advantage by naming the right park first. But generally speaking winning does require being the person who interprets the clues correctly (or at least buys into the right theory).

I do reserve the right to win my own prize should I actually get the highest score. And that's about it. Good luck!

2026 Pioneer Press Medallion Hunt Clue #1

Clue #1 is now officially out so the hunt has begun!   Welcome King Boreas, your swag so notorious It's part of the mythic lore No need for sulkin we're back with Vulcan In time for seven score   Offhand I don't think this is telling us much. Certainly there could be an obscure clue in there, but there are lots of obscure things you could potentially pull out of that, and one point does not determine a line. My recommendation of course is to not burn up your energy searching on clue 1. It may prove of better use to confirm an idea gleaned from a future clue. The biggest danger right now is thinking you've discovered something, and then fixating on it and seeing future clues through that lens and closing yourself off to other possibilities.    That said, a score is twenty so seven score would be 140, a reference to the Winter Carnival's 140th anniversary. But it's also possible the numbers 7, 20 or 720 could be a clue to something. It's also possible they aren't.
